Manga Page Appearance: When looking at a specific manga page, I find that the UI for these pages are a bit hit and miss for my tastes. Also I'm kinda nervous about OLED burn in for the home bar, so apps that remove it when unnecessary are nice. This may not seem like that big a deal to some, but it's a real eyesore for me. Home Bar: Manga Reader removes the home bar when you're reading, Manga Bird does not. Menus (Continued): Adding on to the Menu choices, the Most Popular/Recent Updates/Completed section in Manga Reader are all in the Most Viewed Tab and allow you to swipe between the 3 (or just click at the top), while Manga Bird makes you have to swipe right first to choose from the Hamburger Menu. I personally prefer a Tab Menu for instant access, rather than having to swipe right on a Hamburger Menu to access what I already could with a Tab Menu (especially for one handed use, where reaching for Favorites may be a pain in the ass). Menus: Manga Reader uses a Tab Menu, Manga Bird uses a Hamburger Menu. However, they have slight UI differences that may make or break your decision. The main downside for both is that they don't autodetect whether you're reading a webtoon or manga so you have to manually switch from R>L/L>R scroll to T>B continuous scroll, but so far Manga Rock was the only app I used that did such a thing. They both have notifications (only used Manga Reader's before though), dark mode, one-time fee to remove ads, mangadex as well as many others as sources (no idea if I can get ALL manga yet from mangadex such as fan-colored Demon Slayer, will find out soon), a Most Popular/Recent Updates/Completed section, and work great with webtoons. The main competition in my opinion, for iOS.Įssentially, Manga Reader and Manga Bird are ripoffs of each other (I actually think Manga Reader rips off Manga Bird but could be wrong), and have many similarities. But either way, no ad removals, no dark mode, doesn't remove the iPhone home bar, it's a no from me. They also have notifications from what I've seen. Probably run the risk of spoilers anyway whereas in subreddits they have the ability to tag/hide as spoilers or mods will remove the posts. There's also comments for each manga page which is pretty neat, but if you're like me and go on reddit after a chapter, it's kind of irrelevant but cool nonetheless. They don't really feel curated after looking at these, but maybe I'm just nitpicking here. Notice how the " Recommended" and " CEO Falls in Love with Me" categories are identical. Dark mode aside, it does have a fairly nice UI that is probably closest to Manga Rock for iOS, but I did notice a few unusual issues. I will bring up the upsides of the app however. They don't seem to have iCloud Sync (noticed no sync between my iPhone and iPad), and they don't even have an iPad app. They instead have "coins" you can purchase from $2 to $90 which seem to primarily be for more "questionable, definitely don't read these in public" mangas, but nothing for ad removal. It wouldn't bother me if they allowed a one-time fee to remove all ads, but I have never seen the option to remove ads. First of all, I opened the app and was greeted to a 5 second ad. I'm only bringing Manga Zone up because I see it brought up often and. Note: For anyone who doesn't have an iPhone X/XS/XR/11/11 Pro, when I say "home bar" in the rest of the post, it is a black/white bar that is always visible unless in a specific app that lets it disappear such as the iOS Photos app or Manga Rock. It's that simple, it's king on Android and you should be using it unless you just really don't like it. If you're on Android, reading this, and not using Tachiyomi, just use Tachiyomi. I'm specifically referring to iOS users here because every time I see a "what app should I use now" post, I always see Tachiyomi an overwhelmingly majority of the time which for an iOS user means nothing. Notifications don't even work for me anymore, which is a major must for me so I'm finally seeing the writing on the wall (since I didn't get a notification for the writing on the wall /s). Manga Rock still mostly works for me, but I know it's just a ticking clock until it stops working. 6 months ago I made a post about iOS app alternatives and I figure because of a few updates from certain apps, I should make another post.
